The alluring Los Angeles based musician , Kyd Barrett , gave us a look into the many facets of his thrilling process and humble beginnings in the world of music. Barrett , born to Guatemalan Immigrants , has always used music as a means of expression and curiosity. With an extensive catalog of diverse projects in his portfolio , the work ethic of Kyd Barrett shines brightly in beautiful contrast to the riveting, gloaming tenebrosity of Darkwave and similar genres. Spiral got to get a peak into the exhilarating , tantalizing world of Kyd Barrett.
What made you decide to become a musician/artist?
Kyd: Always been attracted to instruments. The guitar in particular. Music has always been one of my vices. Once I got to high school, I began to take it more seriously and learned music theory as well as blues & rock n roll. I also began to write poetry.

When did you begin making music and how has your process changed between the start of vs now?
Kyd: My first band was while I was still in high school. I used to write all the songs on my guitar, or a piano and then present them to the band to see which ones fit our sound best. The process has definitely changed in the sense that I can produce music now and record most of my ideas on the computer. Big difference from being in a band to being a producer.
What made you decide to learn your instrument(s)?
Kyd: I had family members involved in music at church and friends who could play rock songs. So I decided to finally learn how to play guitar and read sheet music.
What inspired you to write your catalog?
Kyd: My catalog has changed over the five years since I began 'Kyd Barrett' because inspiration tends to come from many different places. The first three albums were fusions of all the genres I enjoy, while still paying homage to my rock n roll roots. Heavily inspired by solo indie musicians and minimalist acts. On the other hand, my stuff recently has been way more electronic and club oriented. After my third EP, I decided I wanted to make people dance, being inspired by live acts that can hold attention for long periods of time, like a dj would or electronic acts from the 80s.

What would you say to other artists or creatives who are wanting to create as well?
Kyd:Don't wait. Make it today! Make it when the inspiration strikes. Some ideas are fleeting, so you have to believe in ourselves enough to follow them where they lead us. And when inspiration is not there, you have to still be vulnerable, clock in, and be open to creativity. You never know when the next best idea will strike so you have to be ready.
How has the process been creating your album /track?
Kyd:Currently halfway through recording a new album. The process is the best part. Countless hours and drafts until you land on the perfect one, that makes your hair stand up. Best feeling ever. Also feels good to be able to preview the project in singles and collaborations. Keeps you focused on the overall goal or vision, while still keeping the audience engaged with new material. It's a fun journey.

What are you looking forward to with your album/track?
Kyd: I look forward to making everyone dance. Can't wait to finally be having an official album that I feel proud to say is my best work up to date. I want an album that completely represents me but also can be played at any party for years to come.
Lyrically what has been your favorite tracks in your discography and your most recent releases?
Kyd: That's hard. I like to create worlds with my lyrics, so it really depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm feeling sinister and sexy, I may go with 'Latex' or 'Sexclub'. But if I'm feeling more adventurous, I would have to go with 'Robot Vampires' or 'Purgatory'.
What is one track /lyrics/ piece of art in your catalog that describes your work the best?
Kyd: I would say the song 'Sexclub' really represents what I do. A song written and produced by myself. It shows the levels of energy that I bring to the table, all while retaining melody and emotion. I also genuinely love that song, so I think people can pick up on that, as it has become a crowd favorite over the last year. Sexy & Dark.
What is your most recent tour you’d like to share or what has been your favorite so far?
Kyd: I played a lot this year, but I think the best one was a show we performed in Modesto. It was Grizz, Vick Vapors, Fevr & myself for Club Infernum. Great friends & a great crowd. Definitely one for the books!
If you could make a dream tour, Who would be your dream tour mates?
Kyd:Too many to name! But I feel like I had a taste of it for the Modesto show! Great friends make for great times! Wish I could throw a festival and have all my friends play.

What do you want the listeners to know about your music and your project?
Kyd:Just be prepared to dance. Kyd Barrett is a dark & sexy vampire that just wants to make you move & shock you down to the core. The music is made with positive energy, that I hope translates and empowers through the speakers.
Coke or Pepsi?
Kyd:BOTH!
Where can the people find you?
